VoiceMark is a podcast player for iPhone and Android that lets you record a voice note tied to a moment in an episode. It was built so that your notes stay on your phone. This page explains what that means in practice.

The short version

Microphone

VoiceMark uses the microphone only while you record a note: from the moment you tap the mic until you tap it again, it hears a few seconds of silence, or the note reaches two minutes. The recording is saved as an audio file in the app's private storage on your phone. It is never uploaded.

Transcripts

On iPhone, notes are transcribed by Apple's speech framework running on the device. The audio is processed on the phone and is not sent to Apple or to us. The first time, iOS downloads Apple's speech model for your note language from Apple.

On Android, VoiceMark uses the phone's on-device speech recognition service (on most phones it comes from Google), which also processes the audio on the phone. Any language model it needs is downloaded by Android.

The transcript is saved with the note on your device. You can edit it or type your own.

What the app connects to

VoiceMark talks to these services, and only for these reasons:

VoiceMark sends nothing else, and nothing at all to us.

Listening history and suggestions

VoiceMark keeps a record on your phone of what you listen to and for how long. It uses it to resume episodes and to rank the shows it suggests on Discover, together with the topics you chose. The suggestions are worked out on your phone and the history never leaves it.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, VoiceMark tells you when a show you follow posts a new episode. The app checks the shows' feeds in the background on your phone, and the phone shows the notification itself. No server of ours is involved. You can turn alerts off for each show on its page, or turn notifications off in your phone's settings.

Photos

VoiceMark asks to add to your photo library only when you choose to save a share card there. It cannot see the photos already in your library.

Data you share or export

You can export notes as Markdown, plain text, CSV or JSON, and turn a note into a share card, either an image or a short video with your recording. In every case you decide where it goes. Once you share something it has left VoiceMark, and the terms of wherever you sent it apply. Each exported note includes a link with the show's feed address, the episode and the second, so VoiceMark can open that moment again.

Backups

If your phone's backup is turned on (iCloud Backup on iPhone, Google's backup on Android), your notes, recordings and settings are part of it. Those backups are stored by Apple or Google under their privacy policies. Downloaded episodes are left out, because they can be downloaded again.

Deleting your data

Everything is stored on your device, so you are in control of it. To remove a note, open it and choose Delete note; its recording goes with it. Downloaded episodes can be removed in Settings → Storage. Deleting the app removes all of its data from the phone. There is no copy on any server to ask us to delete, because none is ever made.

Children

VoiceMark is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from anyone.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with a new “Last updated” date.
